Summer at Sony CSL – Rome brought about significant developments across the lab’s main research areas, which centre on studying Complex Systems and their application to various aspects of human life. Sony CSL – Rome functions as a scientific ecosystem where curiosity and interdisciplinary research are continuously linked to real-world impact. The organisation examines numerous perspectives, including urban organisation, equitable access to resources and opportunities, and how creativity can enhance interactions with emerging technologies. Additionally, it aims to understand which innovations are likely to have the most substantial influence on our future, prompting us to reflect on the role we should play as human beings. This collaborative effort, bolstered by partnerships with the Enrico Fermi Research Centre and Sapienza University of Rome, has led to a growing number of publications in leading scientific journals. These publications provide valuable insights into how complexity shapes various aspects of human endeavours.

Cities
The paper Revealing the core-periphery structure of cities (Federica Fanelli, Hygor Melo, Matteo Bruno, Vittorio Loreto) applies concepts from statistical physics to urban systems, showing how amenities cluster into cores, intermediate zones, and peripheries. This framework highlights how accessibility and inequality are embedded in the spatial organization of cities.

Complementing this, Introducing Friction of Space into the Geography of Cultural Consumption (Lorenzo Biferale, Alessandro Crociata Lavinia Rossi Mori, Claudio Chiappetta, Matteo Bruno) uses GPS mobility data to study how proximity to cultural amenities shapes cultural consumption, revealing persistent spatial inequalities in access and participation.

Finally, Road-Width-Aware Network Optimisation for Bike Lane Planning (Riccardo Basilone, Matteo Bruno, Hygor Piaget Monteiro Melo, Michele Avalle, Vittorio Loreto) introduces a new framework for planning cycling infrastructure by integrating road width data into network simulations. Focusing on Milan, the study shows how protected bike lanes can be optimised to balance connectivity for cyclists with minimal disruption to car traffic. The results demonstrate that extensive, realistic cycling networks can be created with limited impact on existing roads, providing urban planners with flexible strategies for the transition to sustainable mobility.

Human Creativity and AI
Two papers present new methods to expand AI’s creative potential. Dreaming Learning (Alessandro Londei, Matteo Benati, Denise Lanzieri, Vittorio Loreto) introduces an approach that allows machines to internally explore new ideas while remaining consistent with prior knowledge. This enables the development of less conservative and more adaptive solutions.

The second paper, Lyapunov Learning at the Onset of Chaos (Alessandro Londei, Denise Lanzieri, Matteo Benati, Vittorio Loreto), builds on this concept by leveraging the system’s own complex dynamics. This method pushes AI close to instability, paradoxically enhancing its ability to handle novel situations and creative challenges.

Economy and Technological Innovation
The study Comparative analysis of technological fitness and coherence at different geographical scales (Matteo Straccamore, Matteo Bruno, Andrea Tacchella) shows that the effects of technological specialisation and diversification on economic growth vary depending on the territorial scale. While specialisation benefits metropolitan areas, it hinders growth at larger scales, whereas diversification enhances national and metropolitan performance but not regional growth. These findings emphasise the importance of tailoring innovation policies to geographical contexts.

Exploring the Origins of Novelty
The paper Modelling singularities in macroevolution (Alessandro Bellina, Giordano De Marzo, Vittorio Loreto) develops mathematical models based on the Theory of the Adjacent Possible, which explain sudden explosive growth in systems like population, technology, and biological evolution. The results suggest that apparent singularities are not actual infinities, but signs of deep transitions where new combinations of existing elements open unforeseen trajectories of change. Research on complexity shows that sudden changes, inequalities, and breakthroughs often arise from hidden dynamics that connect individual actions to collective outcomes. By bringing these mechanisms to light, we are reminded of our role as active participants in steering innovation, creating fairer societies, and ensuring that technology truly serves human life. Sony CSL at Expo Osaka 2025

Sony Computer Science Laboratories (Sony CSL) participated in Expo Osaka 2025 as part of the activities planned by the Italian Pavilion and in particular within the week dedicated to opportunities and growth scenarios for businesses in the Lazio region.

Specifically, Sony CSL implemented its participation through two addresses during the event “Investing in Lazio: Japan tells Italy in Osaka through the territory,” which were held on May 19 at 3:30 p.m. at the Auditorium of the Italian Pavilion.

Hiroaki Kitano, Chief Technology Fellow of Sony Group Corporation as well as president and CEO of Sony CSL, and Vittorio Loreto, director of Sony CSL – Rome, alternated themselves to tell the audience in the room the story of a virtuous relationship established between Sony CSL and the Lazio territory that gave birth, a few years ago, to the research institution’s Rome laboratory, which before 2022, had its European base in the city of Paris alone.

Therefore, central to Hiroaki Kitano‘s speech has been the narration of what it means for an organization like Sony CSL to invest in Italy and in particular in the Lazio Region in a crucial sector such as scientific research and within a global landscape in total revolution from the point of view of global challenges. This was followed by a talk by Vittorio Loreto, scientific director of the Roman laboratory (Sony CSL – Rome), who dropped Kitano’s words into the territorial context to talk about the ecosystem of knowledge and know-how that the Roman laboratory has generated at the municipal and regional level and how the latter has been able to attract attention abroad.

In particular, Loreto brought the example of the research studies on cities and the urban environment that have already been the subject of an agreement with Città Metropolitana di Roma Capitale in a way that we imagine could be scalable to other areas and institutions, and will announce what research projects Sony CSL is investing in in the area and the implications in terms of impact and value creation.

The Eco of truths, Dialogues between Literature and Science

The event on March 25th will be dedicated to Umberto Eco and in particular to his famous book “Foucault’s Pendulum”, published in 1988. The title of the book refers to the pendulum, the object of the experiment by the French physicist Jean Bernard Léon Foucault, which demonstrates the movement of the earth.

For the purposes of the event, the book will provide the starting point to discuss, in a broader sense, modern information systems, focusing on some of their peculiar characteristics and malfunctions.

The key concept of the event, from which the dialogue will begin, will be “truth”, which in various forms has been a dear theme to Umberto Eco; moreover, the theme of truth is also a useful metaphorical key to understand some of the phenomena that characterize our information systems and many of the pathologies that afflict them.

Together with Emanuele Brugnoli and D. Ruggiero Lo Sardo, researchers in the field of Infosphere, other guests will participate into the dialogue: Antonio Perri, former student of Umberto Eco and currently a professor of Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, and Sociolinguistics of interactions at the University of Suor Orsola Benincasa, along with journalist Filippo Santelli, correspondent for the Economy section of La Repubblica and winner of the 2021 Tutino Journalist Award for his reports from China, where he covered, among other things, the democracy protests in Hong Kong and the development of the coronavirus epidemic.
The event will be moderated by Manuela Cherubini, director, actress, and expert in the relationship between art and science.

Decoding political social media posts, the article on Nature Italy

Our researchers from the labs in Rome and Paris have just written an article based on the last Italian elections, showing how data science can help voters see through online campaigns. The article gives just an overview of a more detailed study we are leading together with the Enrico Fermi Research Centre and Sapienza-University of Rome and it focuses on the analysis we led on social media with the aim of offering interactive tools to improve public awareness of political communication.

Political parties are, indeed, increasingly investing in social media campaigns in an attempt to shape consensus. Refined analysis and complex techniques are now widely used in political communication campaigns. But the communication between parties and citizens, mediated by social media, is totally asymmetric. Voters usually receive information passively as targets of campaigns that aim to convince them, or to engage them with personalised content. Researchers and data scientists can help citizens to widen their perspectives and have a less passive role in political communication.

Presenting our research projects at the Conference on Complex Systems 2022

From the 17th to the 21st of October 2022 some of our researchers and collaborators attended the Conference on Complex Systems (CCS) 2022 in Palma De Mallorca.

The CCS is the largest and most important annual meeting of the international complex systems community. It comes under the auspices of the Complex Systems Society and this edition, organised by IFISC, took place after the previous events held in Lyon, Online, Singapore, Thessaloniki and Cancun.

During those days at the CCS 2022 some of our researchers presented their works, some in collaboration with the Enrico Fermi Research Center (CREF), the Sapienza University of Rome, the Parma University and other institutions.

Hygor Piaget Monteiro Melo from CREF presented the work “Traveling heterogeneity in public transportation”, (by Hygor Piaget Monteiro Melo and Vittorio Loreto) a joint project with CREF.

Ruggiero Lo Sardo from Sony CSL presented both the work “Evolutionary-like dynamics of writing” (by Ruggiero Lo Sardo, Pietro Gravino, Vittorio Loreto) and the work “Disagreement and fragmentation, understanding the structures of trust in news” (by Ruggiero Lo Sardo, Pietro Gravino and Vittorio Loreto).

Matteo Bruno from our lab presented the work “Assessing the 15-Minute city and its impact on the quality of life” (by Claudio Chiappetta, Bernardo Monechi, Matteo Bruno, Enrico Ubaldi, Hygor Piaget Monteiro Melo and Vittorio Loreto).

Matteo Straccamore presented the work on “Urban Economic Fitness and Complexity from Patent Data” (by Matteo Straccamore, Matteo Bruno, Bernardo Monechi, Vittorio Loreto), a collaboration between Sony CSL, CREF and Sapienza University of Rome.

For the poster sessions we had Giulio Prevedello, from Sony CSL, on song success predictions and Andrea Guizzo, presenting the case study of the Parma University Campus on urban public transport modeling resource optimisation, a collaboration between Sony CSL, Parma University and the National Institute for Nuclear Physics.

About science and its ability to speak to people: a postcard from the Maker Faire

From the 7th to the 9th of October we have been attending the Maker Faire Rome 2022-European Edition together with our colleagues from Sony CSL Paris. As during the past editions, it has been a golden opportunity to showcase our research works and to have an interesting exchange with all the people who passed through our booths, within the large Sony exhibition area.

While standing within the all area, we had the feeling of a continuous and significant flow of people, probably driven by the appealing position of our booths and of course by the event itself that, this year, after the Covid-19 restrictions, had recovered its original format with the all Gasometer space occupied by the premises of the faire.

Innova Camera, the leading institution in charge of the Maker Faire organisation spoke about 45.000 participants during the three days of the manifestation which is an incredible result for an event dedicated to innovation, science and technology.

Our exhibition area showed all the main projects under development in our two labs in Paris and in Rome and the number of people who asked us more details about our research activity was really surprising.

From the 15minute city project who totally conquered people’s attention, to the several Infosphere projects that stimulated the curiosity of the public about the analysis of the political speech on social media, continuing with the ForeMusic project and the incredible attraction the topic of music prediction has on people, going on with the project in partnership with CRC-Roma about using AI to improve texts’ understanding. Moreover, the two booths dedicated to augmented creativity and to sustainability had a great response from the public too. The first one because of the opportunity to “play” with neural networks and for the representation of the STARTS Project that tickled imagination through the infinite outcomes of science and arts working together. The second one (the sustainability booth) has been stormed by teenagers who demonstrated to be the most interested in understanding new agriculture methods able to preserve and make this heart an healthier place. Moreover, the app Kouzan, developed in collaboration with CSH Vienna has been used by several users to rate the installations of the whole faire.

During the second day of the faire, we also had the opportunity to speak live about our lab’s activities on the Maker Faire main stage and this small talk we had generated such a genuine interest in the public and a kind of surprise when realising that research has such a prominent position within Sony. Hereafter some of the tweets that went online during the talk.

The Maker Faire experience always requires a great preparation behind, the organisational effort is huge and entering the mood of a communicative dimension with the public could sound somehow challenging, but this is one of those events you always want to participate in, because of the lively atmosphere and the cultural and scientific exchange with the other attendees and for the preciousness of the feedback coming from the public. We are looking forward to attending next year again!

That time of the year has come: we will be attending the Maker Faire 2022 in Rome from Friday 7th until Sunday 9th and we are very glad to open our projects to the public within the Sony exhibition area. Our researchers from Sony CSL Paris and Sony CSL Rome will welcome the public at the Gazometro Ostiense for this 10th edition of the most famous event dedicated to innovation! During the three days of the event, we will move our research work from our labs to the 6 booths that are hosting us at the Maker Faire and the work we are showing will touch interesting themes like sustainable agriculture, 15-minutes city, social dialogue, language and the fascinating interaction between artificial intelligence and arts intelligence and arts. 15 Minutes City

Scientist Carlos Moreno proposed a new concept to revolutionize urban environments, the 15 Minutes City: individuals should always be able to reach a set of venues they visit the most within a 15-minute travel distance by bicycle or on foot.

To assess whether different cities correspond to this idea, Sony CSL developed the 15 Minutes City platform, which will be shown at Maker Faire, including its latest progress. This tool is freely available online here.

ARTIS

Reading comprehension is a complex cognitive task that can be difficult and frustrating for many children with Learning Disorders. Sony CSL’s language team seeks to solve these difficulties by designing accessible and inclusive language technologies to enable hybrid therapies and educational practices. Collaborating with CRC – Research and Care Center, the team designed and evaluated whether a reading comprehension interface, powered by artificial intelligence, can make the entire process of reading and understanding texts more customizable, multimodal and truly inclusive. Art and Science: S+T+ARTS Project

S + T + ARTS is a project funded by the European Commission, promoting the intersection between science, technology, and arts. Its 2021 edition, “Repairing the Present”, asked artists worldwide to imagine a more sustainable, green, and livable cities. Sony CSL and MAXXI museum selected two relevant artists who spent six months in residency in Rome. Olga Kisseleva, an artist from Paris, delved into the topic of the beneficial role of trees in urban areas. Through her installation “Cities live like trees,” she reshaped urban mobility according to the citizen’s awareness of greenery. The second installation, by Susi Gutsche from Vienna, is focused on public awareness of movements of waste. In “Trace Waste,” she mapped the path of the garbage after it has been released in a trash can, both in urban areas of Rome and, more broadly, nation-wide. Sony CSL supported the artists as regards the data and algorithm part. At the same time, MAXXI contributed with its artistic curatorial expertise.

Face to Face

From a scientific point of view, creativity can be related to the exploration of what we call “the space of possibilities”. This space contains all the possible variations of what we already know, together with new, unexpected ideas whose origin and content are difficult to predict. In general, the exploration of the space of possibilities allows us to find original, pleasant or valid solutions starting from the information or data we already have. Artificial intelligence is an effective tool for extracting the important characteristics of a set of data, allowing us a direct interaction with the space of possibilities. The installation proposes to explore the space of human faces by interacting with AI and starting from a photo of the face.

Foremusic

Foremusic enables you to discover in advance how well a song will be received by the public, according to Spotify and YouTube’s success metrics. Sony CSL developed this AI system to investigate whether success can be predicted using big data from major streaming service platforms, to understand what the drivers of popularity in the music industry are.

KOUZAN

At Maker Faire in Rome, KOUZAN, a project in collaboration with CSH Vienna, presents a web application, Kouzan-Expo, which allows an interaction between the visitors and the installations of the fair. Visitors can access the informative material on the installation by scanning its QR code with the app. They can also express their level of appreciation of the installation through stars (1=not interesting, 5=interesting) and add comments. They can browse the chronology of their journey at any moment and get an indication of how predictable their rating activity was.

VALAWAI

VALAWAI (short for Value-Aware AI) project is funded by the European Commission, and, in collaboration with other European institutions (CISIC Barcelona, Institut Mar d’Investigacions Mediques, Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, Ghent University, Studio Stelluti), has developed value-aware AI components based on actual neuroscientific models. The aim is to include moral values in machine decision-making, in a way that makes both the system’s decisions and its reference values are transparent and reinforce human action.

Robotics for Microfarms (ROMI)

In the framework of the EU funded Project ROMI, the sustainability team at Sony CSL will show the cablebot that was jointly developed by IAAC/Fab Lab Barcelona and Sony CSL. The cablebot’s camera is used to take daily images of the plants and helps predict when they will be ready for harvest and what space will become available for new plantations.

WeWrite

Writing is a complex process. Yet, almost all current text editors seem to be designed as if authors already know exactly what they want to write from the beginning, and they just have to type it down in a linear and straightforward way, completely neglecting the complexity of the creative process. The philosophy of WeWrite is to create an environment where creativity, exploration, recombination, and, more in general, the complexities of the evolution of a text are supported to their wildest extents.

Infosphere

The Infosphere research line at Sony CSL is tackling the challenge of redesigning Information Technologies to make information more accessible and social dialogue more transparent, understandable, and healthy by collaborating with journalists, publishers, national authorities and institutions. Among the various projects presented at Maker Faire, a recent study on the linguistic behavior of Italian politicians on social media platforms: Sony CSL researchers were able to provide a visualization of many of the aspects of political communication which were previously inaccessible, thanks to the analysis of social networks’ big data. Sony CSL will also show the Lab4News project, the research and development initiative dedicated to the world of information, publishing and new media.

About the journey of science: the Sony Computer Science Laboratories land in Rome

The inauguration of the Sony Computer Science Laboratories’ (Sony CSL) new branch in Italy took place in Rome on Thursday 16th June in the prestigious Enrico Fermi Research Center, located in the historic building of “I Ragazzi di Via Panisperna”. The event has been a great success, welcoming a considerable number of guests who could enjoy the atmosphere of attending the event in presence, after a long time of online meetings.

In addition to Sony and Sony CSL management, the event has also been attended by different exponents of local and national institutions and representatives from entrepreneurship and innovation. After the welcome by Hiroaki Kitano (President and CEO of Sony CSL, CTO Sony Corp ) and Hideyuki Furumi (President Sony Europe BV), Vittorio Loreto (Director Sony CSL Paris & Rome) provided a brief scientific introduction on the laboratory’s research activities and then it was the turn for the many speakers to take the floor for a contribution to the debate.

After opening the historic offices in Tokyo and Paris and the more recent Kyoto, Sony CSL landed in Rome with a new laboratory dedicated to research in information, sustainability and artificial intelligence. Joint Initiative between Sony Computer Science Laboratories – Rome and CREF

As our opening event in June 2022 aimed to narrate, our laboratory in Rome was born thanks to a scientific agreement with the Enrico Fermi Research Centre (generally referred to as CREF). This agreement represents a unique public-private effort for science and a source of pride for us.

Signing such an agreement conveys a huge meaning both from a scientific perspective and from a conceptual point of view.

The scientific heritage, together with the present achievements and knowledge that the Enrico Fermi Research Center brings to this agreement, makes it possible to link the past to the needs of the future, being aware of the present’s challenges: those challenges Sony CSL aims to address too.

The field of collaboration spans three macro areas of research: Sustainable Cities, AI and Machine Learning for Innovation, Misinformation and Social Dialogue.

The Sustainable Cities project aims at:

the development of What-if Platforms to assess the situation of urban environments on the issue of public transportation quality, inclusiveness, economic activities;
the deployment of What-if Platforms and testing of scenarios for urban environments and their socio-economic challenges;
to forecast the evolution of the What-If Platforms under user-designed scenarios;
the creation of metrics and visualizations, modelling tools, and Al assistantsthat could be adopted by institutional agencies and policymakers worldwide to plan local interventions and reshape the urban infrastructure.

Results anticipated

Scientific Papers: writing of scientific papers on the topic of sustainable cities and the development done in this area using machine learning techniques, which shall be published in high-impact international scientific journals;
Algorithms: creation of AI and Machine Learning algorithms related to the forecast of Urban Environments’ evolution and innovation forecast. Depending on the cases, such algorithms might be released under open-source schemes or integrated into dashboards and platforms;
Platforms: creation of novel platforms for the study and the assessment of urban environments or the integration of new functionalities in the existing ones.

testing the ability of an Al system equipped with specific novelty exploration learning algorithms to assess the evolution of a non-stationary reference system like patenting, scientific papers;
testing the Al system, using learning algorithms, for the optimisation of social systems.

Results anticipated:

Scientific Papers: writing of scientific papers on the topic of the implication of the Al techniques and machine learning in the scientific production, which shall be published in high-impact international scientific journals;
Collaborations: creation of new use-case collaborations with local and international stakeholders.

The Misinformation and Social Dialogue project aims at:

providing long-term technological solutions to the challenges of the Information Age based on new recommender systems, novel news source reputation mechanisms and the dynamics of supply and demand of information in the news ecosystem;
improving the rating mechanisms in order to rebuild the trust in the information system
improving people’s diversity experience on the web without loss of effectiveness in terms of user experience and prevent polarisation and the formation of echo-chambers;
creating innovative, science-based policies for governments, authorities and the news ecosystem actors to minimise misinformation and its effects.

Results anticipated:

Scientific Papers: writing of scientific papers on the topic misinformation and social dialogue, which shall be published in high-impact international scientific journals;
Algorithms: creation of Al and Machine Learning algorithms related to balanced reputation mechanisms and recommender systems;
Platforms: creation of novel platforms for the study and the assessment of online reputation or the integration of new functionalities in the existing ones;

We are glad to announce that our official opening is approaching! The event will take place on the 16th of June at 16.00 at the Enrico Fermi Research Center.

During the first part of the event we will illustrate our scientific activity and the projects we are developing in our new laboratory in Rome; this will be followed by a meeting with the institutions to outline opportunities for collaboration and points of contact. A cocktail party will be held at the end of the event.
