Within the framework of the joint initiative with the Enrico Fermi Research Center, the Sony Computer Science Laboratories in Rome proudly presented “The Eco of truths” an event dedicated to Umberto Eco and in particular to “The Foucault’s Pendulum”, a famous book published in 1988, whose title refers to the pendulum, object of the experiment by the French physicist Jean Bernard Léon Foucault, demonstrating the movement of the earth.
The book chosen for the third episode of the series dedicated to the dialogue between literature and science, provided the starting point to talk about information, its characteristics and its pathologies, and as always, it took the form of a commentary to explore, through the author’s symbolism, the role of truth in today’s information systems. Truth, which in its various forms has been a much-pondered theme by Eco himself.
The event started with the reading of some passages from the book and continued with an initial scientific commentary. Then, the other guests gave their point of view, also opening the discussion and shifting it from the work itself; delving deeper into Eco’s symbolism and exploring the vision of this fundamental figure in the Italian and world cultural landscape.
Along with Emanuele Brugnoli and Donald Ruggiero Lo Sardo, researchers at Sony CSL – Rome and experts in “Infosphere”, dialogued with us Professor Antonio Perri, former student of Umberto Eco and currently professor of Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, and Sociolinguistics of interactions at the University Degli Studi Suor Orsola Benincasa, and journalist Filippo Santelli, correspondent for the Economy of La Repubblica and winner of the 2021 Tutino Journalist Award for his reports from China where he covered, among other things, the protests for democracy in Hong Kong and the development of the coronavirus epidemic.
