The Sony Computer Science Laboratories – Rome launched, in the early months of 2024, the first series of three micro-events blending literature and science, where they’ve been inviting scientists and humanists to comment on one or more authors of literature. The main goal of the initiative is to break down barriers between disciplines and find new ways to tackle present challenges, inspired by wonderful and surprisingly relevant pages.

Concept of the project and objectives

Sony CSL – Rome aims to promote an exchange between science and literature, and by extension, across all fields of knowledge, through dialogues aimed at building a common language among disciplines that traditionally struggle to find points of contact. This aims to foster a true sharing of methods and intentions.

Sony CSL, in its scientific mission, also pursues the ultimate goal of contributing to the well-being of the planet and its inhabitants. This goal finds fulfillment in literary exploration as well. Literature is, in fact, the exploration of the space of possibility, where not only the myriad facets of the human soul find space, but also the infinite possible applications of reality and the equally infinite solutions to humanity’s various problems.

We believe that this gift that literature gave to us is useful not only for all humanity, but also for science.

By attributing this quality of literature to science, we aim to create parallels and reflections. We desire to promote the cross-disciplinary nature of knowledge and, through literature, engage in an exercise of synthesis between different fields, in a historical period where opinions often travel along sharp and harmful oppositions, and where brevity and extreme simplification seem to be foundational characteristics of every debate. Therefore, we seek to open our eyes to different ways of seeing. Different, not necessarily new, and not even innovative. We will call them exploratory.

The dialogues are curated by Milena Di Canio and Vittorio Loreto and supported by all the researchers and staff people.

Participation

As part of the scientific collaboration between our lab and CREF, the events are hosted by the Enrico Fermi Research Center, with public entrance at Piazza del Viminale, 1.
